So, since our last "Planning Kitchen Decor" post, we gave it some thought and concluded that black appliances can only work for us when they don't dominate the space.
The only way that can happen is if the cabinetry is dark and they don't stick out.
Because I am set on having a dark chocolate wood floor in the kitchen, black cabinetry would just be too much darkness. So, with a heavy heart I have switched to shopping for stainless options.
Another new development in the process is that I have decided to attempt a
Hollywood Regency style kitchen, to see if it could look functional
for real life, or if it would look too much like a film set.
This post is about that.
So let's go through some options..
This above one has the dark wood flooring that I want (laminate is fine & warm on the feet). It also has the veiny white counters and matching backsplashes. This can be quartzite, which is non-porous & more durable than granite. So what elements bring this into the HR category? The gold hardware and faucets, gold and lucite stools, dramatic hood, and shiny glass orb pendant lighting.
This kitchen pushes even more into the HR style, which intense black stone counters and backsplash, shiny black modern cabinets, dark curtains, and of course gold accents on plush upholstered stools and prism lighting.
Textbook Hollywood Regency style is black, white, gold, and sometimes a punch of bright colour.
Checkerboard flooring reads immediately HR! Add a pedestal, a bust sculpture, luxurious material like brown velvet, and metallic accents & you've got the look.
& I know typically natural wood would not be in a HR style room, but I find this
kitchen so dramatic yet livable:

Of all of these, this style appeals most to me:
Dark Wood + Gold
The combination has a 1970s feel, but with white marble, metallic surfaces, & other regency glam elements, I think it can feel like a tough or earthy feminine style.
